Atze wins 5th SA Country Championship

Pinnaroo’s Tim Atze has won the 2016 Country Championship, defeating Darren Bilney from Mount Gambier 1up in the Match Play final at Links Lady Bay Golf Club on Fri 23 September.

Atze, who qualified in fifth position after rounds of 73-80 at Victor Harbor and South Lakes respectively, breezed through the first two match play rounds at Mount Compass, winning 7/6 against Andrew Fiebig of South Lakes then defeating Kadina’s Ryan Wheeler 6/5 in the Quarter Finals.

Atze then defeated leading qualifier Nathan Ramsey 7/6 in the Semi Finals at Links Lady Bay before going on to win the Championship with a hard fought win over Bilney to claim his 5th Country Championship title.

‘Its really good to win my 5th Country Championship, it’s been a good week and it was a close match today. I already look forward to coming back and playing the event next year’ Atze said.

Links Lady Bay also played host to the Fourball stableford competition on the final day of Country Week, with the pairing of David Catherwood (Links Lady Bay) & John Riley (Hamley Bridge) victorious carding a solid 45 points.

Runners up in the Fourball were Merv Clark (Lake Albert) & Terry Chant (Millicent) on 40 points.

Earlier in the week Lyal MacGregor (Millicent) claimed the Individual Stableford event played at Mount Compass with 34 points ahead of Terry Chant (Millicent) with 33 points.

On Monday over 27 holes at Victor Harbor, Daryl Morgan & Darren Bilney (Mt Gambier) 112 claimed the Country Foursomes Championship by 7 strokes ahead of Tim Atze (Pinnaroo) & Jared Thoman (Murray Bridge). Vice Presidents Salver Winners (aggregate handicap limit GA 18.5 & over) were Trevor Spillman (Pt Pirie) & Philip Johns (Pt Augusta) – 140.
