MORNING UPDATE: Japan has a grip on both trophies at the halfway point of the finals of the Australian Amateur Championships, presented by Swinging Skirts.
Despite both players probably going in slight underdogs into the 36-hole finals in perfect conditions at Lake Karrinyup, both Suzuka Yamaguchi (2-up) and Keita Nakajima have been full value for their halfway leads.
No.1 seed Ayean Cho clawed back to square with a par at the 14th when Yamaguchi made a rare three-putt, but the Japanese 17-year-old responded with a pair of birdies in her closing four holes, including a bomb up the tier on the sloping 18th green, to reassert her early dominance.
Nakajima has also never trailed, despite Victorian David Micheluzzi having made a couple of runs at the 17-year-old.
The Japanese ace made birdies on 3, 5, 7, 9, 12 and 15 to impress the large gallery, many of whom had Micheluzzi a warmish favourite after he’d been pushed past the 15th hole just once in this match play series.
Still, a great sand save by the Victorian on the 17th brought him back from 3-down to make lunch taste a little sweeter.
The women’s final resumes at 1pm WST, with the men’s out 15 minutes afterwards.
The winners receive entries to their respective Australian Open fields later this year.
