#AusJnr: Xu up for the challenge

Overnight leader Hye Park looked like she was going to ride the Coolangatta waves all the way to the #AusJnr crown after cementing a five-shot buffer from yesterday’s eight under record-breaking round.

Introducing Fiona Xu.

Xu, of Akarana Golf Club in Auckland, started the day eight shots back from Queensland’s Park, but closed the gap to within three shots heading into tomorrow’s marathon 36-holes.

With three birdies in her opening nine (started on 10), Xu recovered from a single bogey blemish on 17 to post a second round of five-under-par 68 following an opening even par 73 yesterday.

“I played really well today and didn’t have any big troubles,” the 14-year-old said post-round.

“My putting was really good today and so we’re my drives.”

“I had more birdies today and less bogies. Everything went well.”

Park, who hails from RACV Royal Pines, had a sound start to her day but found trouble on the par-4 2nd with a bogey. Birdies on the 4th and 6th steadied the score but a disappointing bogey-bogey finish left the teen back where she started hours earlier at eight under.

Concord’s Belinda Ji remains steady with a second round one-under-par 72 to sit in outright third followed by Min A Yoon a further shot back.

The cut was set at 19+ with 60 players advancing to tomorrow’s final round. Play begins at 6:45am (AEST) at Coolangatta Tweed Heads Golf Club.
