Australia has qualified for the inaugural International Crown teams event to be held July 24-27 at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, MD. At the conclusion of the Kia Classic last Sunday, the LPGA announced the final field of 32 players who will represent the eight pre-qualified countries in the inaugural International Crown event. Australia was the final team to make it through the selection process and will be representative by Karrie Webb, Katherine Kirk, amateur Minjee Lee and Lindsey Wright. The team was selected purely from the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings. Webb is currently No. 5, while Lee catapulted up the rankings over the Australian summer with some fantastic performances in the major tournaments before capturing her first professional title the Oates Victorian Open. Webb is extremely excited about the prospect of playing for Australia. I m very very excited to be able to represent Australia. Obviously Australia hasn t had the opportunity to have many team competitions at the professional level. I m really excited about it. Said the World No.5. I think we have a fun team. Minjee is a rising star, I think you will see lots of her in the future. I think it is a great experience for her. Obviously Katherine and Lindsey we re all been out here for awhile. We all get along well. Hopefully we ll take a laid back approach into it and try and have some fun and see how we go. Kirk was super excited as well, It is going to be great fun, I cant wait, I haven t had the chance to represent Australia since turning pro. Even though we are seeded 8, I think we can be the dark house, Aussies love being the underdog. The eight qualified countries were seeded No.1 through No.8 and divided into two pools based on the cumulative team score of the four players Rolex World Ranking. Each country will play two, four-ball matches between each of the other three countries in their pool (Thursday – Saturday). The top two point-earning countries from each pool and one wild card country will advance to play in Sunday s single matches. Two points will be awarded per match (two for a win and one for a halve). The total cumulative points from Thursday – Sunday will determine the champion. Australia will meet the USA team in the first round, they also have Spain and Thailand in their pool. Teams that will be contesting the event, in seeded order are USA, South Korea, Japan, Thailand, Spain, Sweden, Chinese Taipei and Australia.
