Aussies Around The World: Weekend Preview

By Alistair Hogg PGA TOUR Adam Scott, Geoff Ogilvy and Aaron Baddeley return after taking time off to spearhead the Australian charge at the AT&T National in Washington DC. The tournament was opened amid much splendour and patriotism on the fourth of July with host Tiger Woods launching a memorial pro-am named after his late father. The best players on Tour have altered their schedules to attend this new tournament including Woods, Scott, Phil Mickelson, Jim Furyk and Vijay Singh – five of the world&aposs top six players. Add to the mix 13 of Australia&aposs top players, including Scott, and you have the recipe for a very engaging event. The first round gets underway 8pm Thursday (AEST). The Australian made played just one tournament in each of 2005 and 2006, missing the cut in both. He will be joined by 10 countrymen including Steven Bowditch, Greg Chalmers and Jason Day as the second half of the Nationwide Tour season kicks into gear. However defending champion Gavin Coles is a notable absentee as he now plays regularly on the PGA Tour. Last year&aposs runner-up, Australian Bradley Hughes is back and will be seeking to go one better when the action gets underway at StoneWater Highland Heights. The Argentine held off Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk to win his first major and will return to the fairways in Ireland this weekend. Joining him is a 10-storng contingent of Australians led by Richard Green which also features 1990 champ Peter Senior. Marcus Fraser, Brett Rumford and Peter O&aposMalley are also in the field, chasing the European Open at The K Club, venue of the 2006 Ryder Cup. LPGA TOUR No tournament this week. LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR Joanne Mills and Anna Rawson headline an eight-strong Aussie field at the Golf Punk Ladies English Open at Chart Hills in Kent. Golf Punk, a British based magazine is sponsoring the event and proprietor (and former Irish soccer international), Phil Babb will be caddying for none other than the glamorous Rawson. Babb caddied in the Welsh Ladies Open in 2006 and was taken at the depth and talent of the LET field. So much so, he put his hand up to help again and as a result, will tend the bag for one of Australia&aposs best hopes.
