Aussies chase Open spots

By Alistair Hogg Aaron Pike and Andrew Dodt will be chasing spots in the 2007 Open Championship when they play in the Final International Qualifying event at The Lakes in Sydney next week. The pair is part of a 52-strong Aussie contingent vying for four tickets to the Open Championship to be held at Carnoustie, Scotland July 19-22. Also lining up will be Victorian Craig Parry, 1998 Australian Open winner Greg Chalmers and hot Queensland prospect Jason Day who is now plying his trade on the US Nationwide Tour. Parry made mention of his love for the course but also admitted that it will be a tough few days. “I love playing there, it&aposs a very good championship course,” he said. “Like most Sydney courses, the wind at The Lakes can be a strong factor in determining how well you score.” “It tests every club in the bag and the way in which shots are penalised. When the wind gets up in particular on the back nine near the water, you have to hold your own. Anyone who is nervous going down that stretch will find it difficult to complete the round.” The top four finishers at The Lakes next week will be off to the 2007 Open Championship at Carnoustie. Final International Qualifying Events will also be held in Singapore, England and the United States.
