Aussies fade in finish at Youth Olympics

The Australian mixed team have dropped a number of shots throughout the third round at the Zhongshan International Golf Club.

On the final day of competition, Brett Coletta and Elizabeth Elmassian finished up at -6, 10 shots behind Sweden who won the gold medal in a playoff with Korea.

Going into the last round equal third, the Aussies were positive they could claim a medal but a disappointing front nine put those dreams to bed.

“We thought we played very well the first two rounds and we were confident coming into today but it was just one of those days,” Coletta said.

“We just have to reflect on this as a positive and move forward and use it as experience going into our next tournament.”

The front nine was a mix bag for the pair with Coletta hitting four over and Elmassian staying controlled to hit par.

Australia could not claw themselves back up the leader board throughout the final nine holes, losing another shot to conclude their round at -6 after starting the day -11.

“As a whole we performed well in the mixed team event apart from a few holes in today’s round,” Elmassian said.

Mixed team format is an unknown event to Coletta and Elmassian, but they adapted to it as the competition went on.

“The mixed team event is different because we’re not use to it in Australia but once you get use to it and play well it’s a great feeling because you’re helping your teammate as well,” Coletta said.

“This format is a lot of fun. It’s also very different because we don’t care to play foursomes or fourball too often back in Australia. You really need to communicate well with your teammate and also play well to succeed,” Elmassian added.

It’s great for the sport of golf to be back on the Olympic calender and also for the young golfers who are the first to compete in golf at a Youth Olympic Games (YOG).

“I’m over the moon with golf being back in the Olympic calendar; especially for Brett and I we now have a chance to win a gold medal in our sport,” Elmassian said excitedly.

Golf has now finished for the 2014 Nanjing Youth Olympic Games with both Coletta and Elmassian returning home to complete in national competitions

Once Brett returns to Victoria, he’ll be preparing for the Men’s Mandurah Amateur Open in Perth which begins on September 13.

While Elmassian will continue to improve her game and move up the amateur rankings.
