Aussies in strong positions

An Aussie trifecta is providing the biggest challenge to top-two Jeff Overton and Tag Ridings at the Turning Stone Championship after two rounds. Jason Day is outright third and two shots off leader Overton on six-under after firing a 69 which included a hole-in-on on the 179-yard sixth hole. Compatriots Mark Hensby (69) and Robert Allenby (68) are tied for fourth with Charles Howell III (68) on five-under. Day started on the back nine and had a dreadful beginning with a bogey, birdie and double-bogey in the first four holes. However, birdies at the 14th, 5th and 8th – capped off by an ace at the 6th – put him back on course for a potentially strong finish. Other Australians in notable positions are Matthew Goggin and Steve Allan – who could only manage 15 holes before play was suspended – both of whom are three-under in equal 11th position while Nick O&aposHern is two shots further back in a tie for 18th spot. Overton maintained a one-stroke clubhouse lead as weather wreaked havoc at the Atunyote Golf Club. Heavy rain and hail resulted in two suspensions of play and the second round was eventually suspended due to darkness with 23 players still on the course. Leading by one shot at the start of the day, Overton overcame a bogey on his first hole to card a three-under-par 69. The American is at eight-under 136 through 36 holes, one stroke in front of Tag Ridings who signed for a four-under 68. Overton has yet to win on the PGA Tour with his best finish this year being a tie for ninth at the AT&T National. After bogeying his opening hole, the 25-year-old rebounded with three birdies on the front nine at the 4th, 8th and 9th. He had just one more birdie coming in, but it was enough to maintain the lead over Ridings, who carded six birdies and two bogeys on Friday. Defending champion Steve Flesch, who is trying to salvage a season which sees him ranked 71st on the money list, is 11 shots off the lead following a 73.
