Aussies start slowly in Illinois

A group of three Aussies is four shots off the pace after the first round of the John Deere Classic in Illinois. Peter Lonard, David Lutterus and Gavin Coles all shot three-under par rounds of 68 in a rain interrupted opening day to the tournament. Lonard&aposs up-and-down round included six birdies and three bogeys, whereas Coles was much more consistent with two birdies, an eagle and only one bogey. American Ken Duke and Korean Charlie Wi both shot seven-under par 64 to take the clubhouse lead. Duke opened his round on the back nine, where he carded four birdies. He had consecutive birdies after making the turn, then added two more at the seventh and ninth around his lone bogey at the par-four eighth. They hold a one-shot lead over Eric Axley, Will MacKenzie, Kenny Perry and Garrett Willis, who all shot 65s. Nick Flanagan was on course for a solid round before two late bogeys left him at two-under. Steve Allan is a further shot back, while Aaron Baddeley, Jason Day and Nathan Green are all at even par. John Senden, Mark Hensby and Andrew Buckle will struggle to make the cut after all three shot one-over par.
