Australia lead in Quebec

Australia took full points from the opening round after a 6 matches to 3 win over New Zealand on the first day of the Four Nations Cup at Laval Sur Le Lac in Canada. In the morning foursomes, Matt Jager (WA) and Matt Giles (NSW) defeated New Zealand pair Scott Johnston and Peter Spearman-Burn 3&2 while Daniel Beckmann (VIC) and Lester Peterson defeated Thomas Spearman-Burn and Daniel Pearce by the same scoreline. Peterson, Australian team manager, is filling in for Daniel Nisbet (QLD) who is ill. Brendan Smith (NSW) and Jordan Sherratt (SA) were edged out of their contest 4&3 by Ryan Fox and Ben Wallace. In the afternoon singles matches, Australia won 4 matches to New Zealand s 2 as Jager and Giles repeated their morning form with wins over Ryan Fox and Peter Spearman-Burn respectively. Beckmann accounted for Scott Johnston 6&5 and Sherratt defeated Daniel Pearce 2&1. Brendan Smith and Lester Peterson were the only singles losses with both losing narrowly 2&1. In the other contest, Canada defeated Japan 7 matches to 2. The second round continues overnight on Thursday.
