Final Round Report:
The Australian team of Viraat Badhwar (QLD), Ricky Kato (NSW), Oliver Goss (WA) and Anthony Murdaca (SA) has won the Toyota World Junior Championship at Chuckyo Golf Club in Japan.
Trailing leaders Canada by eight strokes going into the final round and sitting in fourth place, the Australians closed with a superb final round team total of 10-under par to claim victory by two strokes at 13-under for the championship.
Badhwar and Kato both closed with final round 67s (-4), Goss finished with a 69 (-2) and Murdaca 71 (E) to seal Australia’s first win at the championship. The previous best finish was a tie for third in 2007 and 2008.
Overnight leaders Canada finished tied with Japan in second place at 11-under with the USA in fourth at 10-under par.
Queensland’s Viraat Badhwar won the tournament’s individual title, finishing at 12-under par following rounds of 72-68-65-67 on the par 71 6,846 yard course.
Round 3 Report:
The Australian team dropped to fourth place after the third round of the Toyota World Junior Championship in Japan.
Viraat Badhwar was the best of the Australians with a third round 7-under par 65. Ricky Kato finished with a 75. Oliver Goss and Anthony Murdaca both fired 78s.
Badhwar is joint leader in the individual standings.
Australia sits 8 strokes behind leaders Canada (-11). The United States is second with hosts Japan sitting third.
Round 2 Report:
The Australian team moved into second place in Japan following a superb 11-under par team score at the Toyota World Junior.
All players were under par with Ricky Kato (-6), Viraat Badhwar (-3), Oliver Goss (-2) and Anthony Murdaca (-2).
Canada holds the second round lead after they shot a 12-under par total for the day to go to 13-under par for the tournament. They have a 5-stroke lead over Australia and a 6-stroke lead over Japan. Adam Svensson (64) and Kevin Kwon (67) were the low rounds for Canada and the tournament as a whole for the day.
The captain of Team Canada Mike Carroll had this to say about his team, "we had two of our better players (Adam and Kevin) shoot a 64 & 67 as well as Blair Hamilton who got it back from being 3-over to end up at 1-under. Going into tomorrow with the lead can never be a bad thing, as we saw, there are some very low scores to be had out there as we saw not only from our team, but from Australia and Japan".
The teams of Australia and Japan made the biggest moves today jumping into 2nd and 3rd place respectively. The golf course played very well and was in great condition. The golf staff did a great job getting the course in shape for the round after last night's typhoon.
Round 1 Report:
The Australian team of Oliver Goss, Ricky Kato, Anthony Murdaca and Viraat Badhwar are in fifth place following the opening round of the 2012 TOYOTA Junior Golf World Cup being played at Chuckyo Golf Club on the Ishino Course in the Aichi Prefecture, Japan.
Goss was the best of the Australians with a 1-under par 70 while Badhwar fired a 1-over par 72 and Badhwar finished with a 74 with the Australians finishing at 3-over par for the day.
The par 71 6,846 yard course is a true test for the best juniors in the world. 13 countries representing 6 continents are competing for the championship.
The Round 1 tee times were played earlier as Typhoon Guchol was due to hit the area later in the day. With the storm approaching the conditions were to worsen throughout the morning.
Mexico takes the lead in the first round with a score of 4 under par. The play of Juan Carlos Serrano leads his team with the score of 69 (-3) Right behind the leaders are United States and Canada with a score of one under par.
The captain of Mexico Jorge Coghlan stated "the fine play of Juan Carlos helped motivate his teammates. My inexperienced Mexican team did extremely well in the wind and rain, being patient under these difficult circumstances was their strong point today."
