AUSTRALIAN MEN S AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP There were more upsets on the second day of Match Play at the Australian Amateur Championship at Woodlands Golf Club in Melbourne. Defending champion Matt Stieger (NSW) was knocked out by Germany s Marcel Schneider 5&4 while medallist and 2011 Stroke Play champion Cameron Smith lost to Ricky Kato (NSW) 1up Daniel Bringolf (NSW) defeated Victorian Todd Sinnott 4&3 while Geoff Drakeford (Vic) and Daniel Nisbet (Qld) also won. New Zealanders Blair Riordan and Ben Campbell made their exit from the championship. The quarter finalists are Ricky Kato (NSW), Marcel Schneider (GER), Ruben Sondjaja (NSW), Daniel Bringolf (NSW), Geoff Drakeford (Vic), Jordan Zunic (NSW), Christopher-John Harrop (Qld) and Daniel Nisbet (Qld). Both the quarter finals and semi finals are played on Saturday with the 36 hole final to be held on Sunday. AUSTRALIAN WOMEN S AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP Sandbelt experience paid dividends in the women’s field as the final eight made their way into the quarter finals at Woodlands. Kingston Heath members Breanna Elliott, Tilly Poulsen and Grace Lennon all won to make it into Saturday while Long Island s Montana Strauss defeated Queensland s Jaimee Dougan 3&2. World Number 1 Lydia Ko (NZ) is the only international player left in the field after she defeated Cathleen Santoso 6&5. 2011 Amateur runner up Minjee Lee (WA) made it through with a 7&5 win over Japan s Kotone Hori. The quarter finalists are Breanna Elliott (Vic), Grace Lennon (Vic), Tilly Poulsen (Vic), Whitney Hillier (WA), Adriana Brent (NSW), Lydia Ko (NZ), Montana Strauss (Vic) and Minjee Lee (WA).
