The Emirates Australian Open – 9 South Australian’s flying the flag
The final field has been released for the 2014 Emirates Australian Open featuring some of the biggest names in local and international golf.
Players including Rory McIlroy, Adam Scott, Jordan Speith, Geoff Ogilvy, John Senden, Matt Jones, Stuart Appleby, Steven Bowditch, Daniel Chopra, Boo Weekley, Kyle Stanley and Brendan de Jonge will be on display at The Australian Golf Club from the 27th-30th of November competing for Australia’s most coveted title.
Of the 156 starters, South Australia has nine representatives who have gained entry into the championship to tackle The Australian layout. They are:
1. Nick Cullen (18) – Winner of any OneAsia Tournament (2years) and Qualifying School (1year)
2. Jason Norris (23) – Top 50 of 2013 OneAsia Order of Merit
3. Adam Bland (48) – Leading players from PGA Tour of Australasia Tournament Exemption Categories (capped at Cat.12 of the 2014 Categories) (16 positions)
4. Wade Ormsby (95) – Tournament Invitations (10 positions)
5. Max McCardle (108) – local exemptions as agreed between Golf Australia and PGA of Australia (30 positions)
6. Anthony Murdaca (am) (114) – 30 local exemptions as agreed between Golf Australia and PGA of Australia (30 positions)
7. Peter Cooke (129) – Residual position (shared with players from the PGA Tour of Australasia Exemption categories)
8. Paul Spargo (132) – Residual position (shared with players from the PGA Tour of Australasia Exemption categories)
9. Tom Bond (136) – Residual position (shared with players from the PGA Tour of Australasia Exemption categories)
In the lead up to The Emirates Australian Open, Golf SA will chat with some of the above players and bring to you their hopes and expectations for the week. Here’s hoping a local can claim Australia's most prestigious golf championship and come Sunday hold aloft the Stonehaven Cup.
They would become South Australia's third winner after Rufus Stewart 1927 (first Kooyonga Club Pro) and Fergus McMahon 1935 (1925 Kooyonga Club Champ).
