Australian Percy lurks in Puerto Rico

A second consecutive seven-under 65 score has seen Argentine Andres Romero take the lead in the Puerto Rico Open on Friday as Australian Cameron Percy finds himself just five strokes off the lead. Argentine Romero, though, may have double-bogeyed the par-three eighth hole in his second round at the Rio Grande course, but it proved a minor blip as he also reeled off nine birdies in an impressive display. In his last two rounds Romero has now posted 16 birdies and an eagle and his efforts were good enough to take him to 14 under for the tournament as he enjoys a one-stroke lead over American Scott Brown. “I&aposm just playing well. I started out very, very well,” Romero told the PGA Tour&aposs website. “But really what&aposs helped me is going back to my old putter. It&aposs really been great for me. “I had used that putter for a long time and then after a while I changed it. “And then besides playing the greens well, I&aposm also striking the ball well. So finally all three things have come together, putting well, hitting my irons well, driving well.” Romero&aposs round, however, was trumped by second-placed Brown, who climbed 12 positions through a blistering nine-under 63 on Friday in a round that included an eagle, eight birdies and a bogey for good measure. Brown finds himself one stroke ahead of compatriots Peter Uhlein and Steve LeBrun, who both posted seven-under 65s in their second round. Uhlein, though, finds himself in a rich vein of form as his efforts come on the back of a fourth-placed finish in last week&aposs Tshwane Open in South Africa, giving him the chance to play in the Tampa Bay Championship next weekend if he can manage a top-10 finish. In a good day for Argentina, Fabian Gomez is just one shot further back on 11-under for the tournament after producing a blemish-free eight-under 64 round to be one stroke ahead of a nine-strong group tied for sixth at nine-under that includes Percy. Of that group, American defending champion George McNeil was the stand-out on the second day, his eight-under 64 seeing him climb 58 positions. McNeil, though, left it late, as he turned for home on just two under, before producing four birdies and an eagle at the 18th on the back nine. Percy, meanwhile, endured an inconsistent day on the Rio Grande course as he struggled to replicate his first-round 65, the 38-year-old Victorian finishing his two-under 70 round with six birdies and four bogeys to his name. Percy was one of just four Australians to make the cut as he finds himself three strokes ahead of Nick O&aposHern, who shot his second consecutive three-under 69 on Friday to be at six-under overall. O&aposHern is two strokes ahead of Matt Jones (69) and Rod Pampling (68) but Robert Allenby, Alistair Presnell, Nathan Green, Steven Bowditch and Scott Gardiner were not so lucky as they endured an early finish to their tournaments.
