Avoca hosts women’s sandgreens

A pronounced field of 127 women teed off today contesting the 2015 Victorian Women’s Sandgreens Championship. This year’s host is the impressive Avoca Country Golf Club, located 50 minutes North West of Ballarat, who have presented the course in ideal conditions given a downfall of rain on the past few days.

After a light drizzle before play, it was 2013 Champion Helen Pascoe who was the only one to break 80 firing a seven over 79. Pascoe’s round was up and down with a notable 36 on the front nine, which included a birdie on the Par 4 1st. Murray Downs member Mary Anne Davis is one back on 80.

In the nett, Isobel Oliver (Inverleigh) fired the best round for the day with a fine 65 off her 33 handicap. Isobel found the going easy showing that she has valuable skills on the scrapes. Glenda Marshall (Beechworth) & Julie Trask (Yarrawonga) are not far behind on 68. Joy Kennedy (Elmore) played this morning to card a respectful score of 70 off her handicap of 14.

While many of the participants have been attending the Victorian Sandgreens Championship for many years, a couple of noticeable stories include Strathbogie member Helen Hill & Tarrawingee member Yvonne McAliece who have been attending since 1984 & 1985 respectively. With only a couple of years missed it is great to see players continually involved in this unique championship.

Players will enjoy the tournament dinner tonight followed by their second and final round tomorrow with the morning field out at 7:30am.
