Royal Canberra&aposs Bill Banks has won his fifth Men&aposs NSW Senior Championship title, winning by one stroke from Mona Vale&aposs Stefan Albinski. A double bogey from Albinski on the 15th and a short missed putt on 18 allowed others to get a sniff. Bill Banks took that opportunity with a birdie on the last to win by a stroke from Albinski. Cabramatta&aposs Greg McKay was a further stroke behind, finishing in third. 67-year-old Banks described his victory as “one for the old guys”, with other leading contenders having not long been in the senior ranks. NSW won the Walking Stick Trophy (Interstate Teams match) by 22 strokes. Pre-event favourite Stefan Albinski (Mona Vale GC) leads the field after a fine par round of 70 this morning at Howlong Golf Club. He is joined at the top of the leaderboard by four time winner of the event, Royal Canberra&aposs Bill Banks. Rain hit mid-way through the afternoon round, which is the first rain in the area for almost four months, however all players still managed to get through their round. One highlight of the afternoon round was a hole in one from Colac&aposs Greg Welsh on the 127 metre par three 5th hole. The other was the two over par round of 72 from Jack Parker (Wyong GC), aged 72 years.

The state’s best senior amateur golfers will converge on Howlong Golf Club tomorrow to contest the premier event on the NSW Seniors Amateur Golf Calender, the 2013 Men’sNSW Senior Championship. 170 competitors will take part in the three day, 54-hole Championship event. A social dinner function will be held on 26 February at the Club, available for all participants and guests. The Championship was open to male amateurs who are 55 years of age or over as at the first day of play, whose handicap does not exceed 15.4 strokes at the date of entry. Two-time defending champion, Queenslander Peter King (Windaroo Lakes Golf Club) will again be back to contest the event. There are many likely challengers for this year s title with Mona Vale s Stefan Albinski, a winner of most of Australia s Senior events, looking to add his home state’s title to the list. King and Albinski will be joined by a host of Australia s recognised senior golfers, including Russell Rogers, Denis Dale and Bill Banks. There are representatives from Queensland, NSW, ACT, Victoria and Tasmania. However for every serious competitor, there will be a handful of participants out to enjoy the few days of golf with their mates. There are a number of prizes awarded for the Championship, including NSW Senior Championship (Overall winner); Division 1 (55-60 years); Division 2 (60–64 years); Division 3 (65-70 years); Division 4 (70 years and over) and NSW Senior Country Champion. This year also sees the Senior Interstate matches return to NSW, aptly named The Walking Stick Trophy . This event is run in conjunction with the NSW, Victorian and Queensland State Seniors Championship on a rotational basis between these States. Each team consists of six players, with the lowest two scores dropped each day. This event was first played in 2005 at Howlong Country Golf Club, therefore this year sees it do a full circle and return to the course yet again. Queensland currently holds the trophy but it will be keenly contested with all States, including ACT, fielding strong teams. The teams for 2013 are: NSW Denis Dale Stefan Albinski Steve Gibson Jack Parker Ross Bockman Greg Stanford Queensland Peter King Sam Christie Graham Hills John Grosskreutz Cyril Cordery Wolfgang Wiesemes Victoria Alan Bullas Greg Welsh Ray Walker Chris Tatt Guy Krall Tony Hyde ACT Bill Banks Bryan Kelly Joe Marumo Ross Rees Bob Still Kevin O Brien Draws, results and reports will be available daily on the Golf NSW website.
