Sunningdale Golf Club in Berkshire has been a place of high drama for Australian women’s golf and this year s Ricoh Women’s British Open is unlikely to be any different. Eight Australians are in the field which will also be former world number one Annika Sorenstam s final appearance at a major before her retirement at the end of this year. For current world number 6 Karrie Webb, the course holds fond memories after she was crowned champion in the 1997 event at Sunningdale. This year s tournament will see Webb push for a fourth British Open crown. But it won t be an easy ride as defending champion and current world number one Lorena Ochoa, Paula Creamer and Evian Masters champion Helen Alfredsson fight for the silverware. For Australia s Rachel Hetherington, the course holds bittersweet memories. In 2004, she began the final round with a chance of glory but was left runner-up after England s Karen Stupples began her round with an extraordinary eagle-albatross combination to race away to victory by five strokes. Lindsey Wright and Katherine Hull have had mixed results in championship golf so far but will hope to post some of their best results at this year s championship. Joanne Mills is currently sitting 13th on the Ladies European Tour money list and tied for second at the Spanish Open with another Australian in this year s field, Nikki Garrett. Rebecca Coakley and Leah Hart will also start the Open after they came through qualifying on Monday to make the final field.
