Bennett’s barnstorming run

Emma Bennett has continued her spectacular run at the British Amateur reaching the final 16 at The Alwoodley Golf Club in Leeds. The Victorian triumphed in both of her overnight matches to remain the last Aussie standing. Bennett&aposs first assignment was against Belgian Benedicte Toumpsin. After establishing an early lead, the 22-year old was never going to let it slip, triumphing 6&4 to progress to the second round. Bennett&aposs next opponent was Deirdre Smith who put up more of a fight but was no match for the Aussie in the end, going down 2&1. The fifth seed showed all the grit and tenacity that got her to the final of the Australian Amateur Championship, overcoming the challenge from her Irish opponent. The Victorian now faces Breanne Loucks of Wales in the round of 16. Bennett is the last remaining Australian in the draw after Kate Combes fell to leading qualifier Carlota Ciganda 6&4 in the opening round while Stacey Keating was defeated 1down by Sahra Hassan after a pulsating 22 holes. Keating was victorious in her morning match 7&5 over Brit Emma Duggleby. The round of 16 gets underway Friday afternoon (AEST).
