Betland ready to fire

Forbes gun John Betland is primed for a big result in this weekend’s Golf NSW Sand and Grass Greens Championship being held at Forbes and Grenfell Golf Clubs.

The tournament looks like becoming a regular fixture on the calendar with around 100 starters from across the State descending on the Forbes and Weddin regions for the inaugural event.

Betland, the 10-time club champion at Forbes is looking forward to the challenge. “It’s an interesting format. It should be alright, a couple of rounds of golf and a few beers,”he laughed.

The 32-year-old is quietly confident of a good result despite a limited amount of golf recently. “My game’s OK. I’ve been a bit busy working and getting stuff done trying to get the game in shape. I’ll get out and hit a few balls beforehand,” he said.

Betland is expecting some stiff competition for the title, in particular the current Forbes Golf Club Champion, Andrew Dukes and Betland’s brother Steve.

“Steve’s been playing a bit. He played Barnbougle Dunes down in Tasmania last week and just got back.”

“He'll be ready. But If I play alright I should be up there around the money,” he grinned.

Asked about his preference for the alternative putting surfaces, Betland had a definite choice: “I do prefer the grass. On the sand you’ve just got to run it up onto them all the time,”he said.

“It’s pretty hard at Grenfell too. It's on the side of a hill. It’s a very tough sand green course actually.”

“It should be a good weekend,” he smiled.
