The final of the Women’s Champion of Champions was a true battle that literally went to the last putt! With exceptionally good weather, two very talented young players and the Patterson River golf course presented in magnificent condition the final could not get any better.
Bianca Ling earned her spot in the tournament by winning the Victorian Country Championship whilst Kono Matsumuto, at a tender age of 14, won her home club championship to deserve the spot in the 2013 competitive field.
Bianca Ling took advantage early in the match as Kono’s putter seemed to need a bit of time to warm up. These starting holes gave Bianca an early lead which she managed to maintain through the most of the morning finishing 1 up after 18 holes.
After a quick break the players headed out to continue their battle. Bianca reinforced her leading position by winning the 19th hole straight away. From there on, a birdie was pretty much required to win a hole but Kono made up enough ground to square the match after 27 holes. Up and downs were compulsory to stay close to the opponent as no hole was halved with less than a par to the 35th hole. The ball striking in windy conditions was exceptionally good by both players who complemented it with their quality putting.
Only a small error could separate the pair at this stage and it came from Kono on the 36th hole. Her second shot on the par 5 found a fairway bunker. Despite this situation Kono managed to only bogey the hole putting enough pressure on Bianca making her sink the winning 7 foot par putt. The match was played in the best spirit with smiles and hugs shared in the end.
Special congratulations to these two players for their excellent performance in the final and to all the players that participated in this year’s event.
