It’s going to be an interesting phone call to the boss for Anthony Brunero next time they talk after he claimed victory in the NSW Country Championship at Goulburn Golf Club.
Brunero booked his place in the NSW Open at Stonecutters Ridge next week courtesy of his solid win in the Country Championship. But before then, he’s going to have to break the news to his boss.
“We don’t talk a lot about golf, it’s just business, it’s going to be an interesting call tomorrow.”
“He’s a mad golfer and plays at Magenta Shores, so I’ll try and smooth it over with him,” Brunero grinned.
On a day when a strong north-westerly wind dented plenty of egos, Brunero mastered the conditions best, posting an impressive four-under-par round of 66 to go with his first-round 71 to win by two shots. Overnight leader and defending Champion, Dylan Perry couldn't match his first round effort of 66, signing for a 3-over par 73 as the conditions deteriorated.
Brunero, who works as a contract carpenter, was surprised by his win.
“I haven’t been playing much golf lately,” he said. “From five (shots) behind I wasn’t expecting to win, but a couple of guys had some tough scores in the conditions, so for me, it was a great result.
“I got the putter going today. I holed a few putts, made a few birdies; it was good.
“The wind didn’t really affect me. I can hit it pretty low,” he said.
This year’s NSW Open won’t be Brunero’s first; he made his maiden appearance in the championship about eight years ago at the Vintage Golf Club. With the quality of players assembled to compete this year, Brunero is keen to play.
“I can’t wait to get up there and have a game; it will be awesome.”
As for the decision to accept his place in the field, Brunero is happy to wait.
“It’s a big opportunity to pass up; I’ll sleep on it before I make the call.
“Maybe I’ll have to take him a coffee next time I see him to square it up, “ Brunero Smiled.
