Men’s Country Fourball – Monday
City Golf Club hosted the first day of the championship, with the Fourball Championship beginning the week.

Tough conditions with the course set up from the same length and with the same pin positions at the final round of the Queensland PGA, held the day prior challenged players considerably. However, the City GC duo of Bruce Spendelove and Brian Richards claimed the 2019 Men’s Country Fourball Championship on 43 points, with a close three way countback.

Second place was awarded to Michael Treay (Bay Islands) and John Smith (Craignish) for their close pursuit of the winners.

And third place was awarded to John Anderson (Sandy Gallop) and Albert Horsfall (Mt Coolum).

Men’s Country Foursomes – Tuesday
Players headed to Toowoomba Golf Club for day two and the Foursomes Championship on Tuesday with 45 pairs vying for their Divisional titles.

The dynamic duo of father and son pairing Norm (Dysart) and Ray Foster (Calliope) taking victory with a 2 over total of 74, despite the challenging narrow fairways presented at Toowoomba. Their precision with their iron play helped them to seal the deal.

2016 winners Sam Blackshaw and Anthony Timms of City GC chased the lead with only one shot back, to claim runners up.

Division 2 gross honours went to Murgon duo, Peter Hegarty and James Wright for a score of 86.

Men’s Country Stroke Play – Thursday and Friday
Chris Webster of Toowoomba GC celebrates his win tonight, made that much sweeter as he rejoices in his second win, 31 years later. In a field of 107 players, Webster tied the lowest round of the event with a 3 under 67 on the final day of the 36 hole event.

Overnight leader Wade Edwards of City GC, faltered early to sacrifice his advantage in a tie for second.

While defending champion Scott Warren of Gin Gin couldn’t produce second day heroics to overcome a 2 shot deficit and claim his fifth straight Country title. A 141 total saw him tied him with Timms and Edwards.

Intimate knowledge of the City GC’s layout enabled Board member Norm Mitchell to claim the B Grade Championship with rounds of 78 and 83, edging out Beau Stafford City by 2 shots.

C Grade champion was Luke McDermott, also from City GC with the narrowest of margins to runner up Neil Hedge.

Preventing a clean sweep of the grades was Kingaroy’s Trevor Turner who’s rounds of 104 and 90 saw him claim the D Grade Championship by 4 shots from Leith Baxter (City).

Thank you to both golf clubs for hosting the week, especially City GC for providing their course the week after the Qld PGA. The course was in great condition with players looking forward to returning.

Sincerest thanks to major sponsor City Golf Club and City Golf Club Motel for their continued support of not only the Men’s Country Week but also the Qld Men’s Sand Greens Championships. It is this support which drives the success of both events.
