Bishop Scoops up a Victory at Spring Valley

Sue Bishop is the winner of the 2013 Silver Spoon State Final and etches her name in history as the inaugural winner of the Burtta Cheney Trophy at Spring Valley today.

Miss Burtta Cheney MBE was a pioneer of women’s golf and a much respected and loved Golf Victoria Life Member. She enjoyed a long and illustrious career as a player, administrator and the founder of junior girls’ golf in Victoria, and sadly passed away at the age of 95 last year. Throughout her years of competing at club, state, and national level, Miss Cheney developed an impressive collection of engraved trophy spoons. Her family kindly donated part of her collection to Golf Victoria, and it is quite fitting that a perpetual trophy for the Silver Spoon event was created in her honour.

The event commences with qualifying rounds at Club level, with the winner at each club proceeding to an 18-Hole Stableford State Final. 106 players from clubs all across Victoria competed in today’s State Final. Dark clouds circled Spring Valley mid-morning  but thankfully cleared  to a beautiful sunny day.

Sue Bishop from Rosanna set the bar high in the morning field with a blistering score of 42 points. It was an outstanding achievement for the 25 marker as it was her first time playing the course. AM runner-up was Veronica Maher from Trentham off a handicap of 23 with 37 points. In the afternoon, it was Lynette Coxon from Terang (Hcap 39) coming in with a fantastic 41 points to finish overall runner-up for the day. PM Runner-up was Paula McGovern from Waverley off a handicap of 21 with 40 points.

Golf Victoria wishes to thank Spring Valley GC for hosting this year’s State Final at short notice, and to all the clubs and players for their ongoing support of this event.
