The ISPS Handa Australian Open Blind Golf Championships have been run and won at Royal Sydney Golf Club.
Over 30 vision impaired golfers took part in the 36-hole tournament with competitors coming from across Australia, the United Kingdom and Canada.
Despite a few first round hiccups with a late start, Secretary of blind golf NSW, Graham Coulton was thrilled with the tournament.
“Everything has worked out fine, The leaders are going head-to-head, there’s a couple of internationals here,
“Andy Sellers from England was the first round leader, he had a nett 81,”
“Michelle Watts from Sydney also had a nett 81 too,”
“It’s going to be a close event and we are hoping to see some good golf when they get to the 18th,”
The Blind Golf Association of Australia has been around since the late 1980’s when the International Blind Golf Association was formed with the support of Japanese philanthropist and avid golfer Dr Handa.
Tournaments are held across Australia with events in every state.
“Each State has its own event.”
“We have the Australian Open here this year in Sydney, and The Australia Stableford Championship in Adelaide.” Mr Coulton said.
