It was yet another exciting finale in today’s Junior Pennant final as Box Hill pulled off a remarkable come-from-behind victory over Royal Melbourne to claim the 2018 honours at Southern Golf Club.
In October, 46 teams embarked on the round robin season and only the last two remained today.
Players teed off in still conditions at 1:00pm and it was Royal Melbourne who shot out to a 3-0 lead as Natasha Jones, Grace Mak and Jack Keating won the number 6, 3 and 2 matches respectively.
With considerable leads in 2 other matches, Royal Melbourne must have felt that the finish line was not far away.
However, the 3 remaining matches all began to swing in Box Hill’s favour and suddenly the contest was well and truly alive again.
Eric Li recorded Box Hill’s first win with a 1 up victory in the number 5 match and this was soon followed by a second win from Zachary Mulholland in the number 4 match.
The number 1 match saw Royal Melbourne’s Daniel Tuddenham head down the 18th with a 1 up lead over Box Hill’s Michael Song.
On the par four 18th, Song hit a glorious approach shot on to the green which forced Tuddenham to concede after finding trouble in a water hazard and the match was extended to a 19th hole.
Players headed back to the 1st hole for a playoff and it was Song who clinched the final match with a solid par that tied the contest at 3 apiece.
For the sudden death playoff, both teams elected to send their numbers 1s straight back and the pair went head to head again on the par four 1st hole.
Song teed off first and hit a booming drive straight down the centre.
Tuddenham followed the effort with a solid drive of his own, finishing 20m short of Song and just marginally in the right rough.
Unfortunately for Tuddenham, his approach shot leaked to the right and fell away into the greenside water hazard.
The 14-year-old Song showed incredible maturity and composure and made another extremely steady par to close it out and declare his team the 2018 champions.
