Ray Walker is the new champion at Bright! As much as the rain was welcome, for the first time in the 10 year history of this event, the first round had to be abandoned. Over 1.5 in of rain saturated the picturesque Bright golf course with constant rain right through the day. The rain didn’t dampen the spirit of the 80 seniors and many of their partners who every year look forward to enjoying the club’s hospitality. The tournament dinner went ahead and was well attended with nearly 90 participants.
The weather conditions improved dramatically for day two and with a light breeze and slower greens the trophy was up for grabs. Ray Walker (Chirnside Park) and Charles Robertson (Commonwealth) parred the course. With both players tied on a 72 gross a play-off was needed to decide the 2013 Alpine Senior Masters Champion. It took them 2 holes to break the tie and it was Ray Walker that claimed the title after paring the 16th hole. Congratulations to both players for an excellent round!
For the handicap trophy, there were 4 players tied with a 69 nett and a count back was needed too. Michel Holloway (The National – hcp- 4) was the eventual winner with a nett score of 69 with Freddy Barton (Eastwood – hcp 7) becoming the runner up.
Overall the event was a great success thanks to the support of the Bright Country Golf Club members and volunteers. In particular Peter McGrath (Club Captain), Peter Lukey (Club Tournament Coordinator) who were well prepared for the tournament, to Cameron Wicks (Course Superintendent) who managed to present the golf course in great condition despite of the heavy rain & to all the women and other volunteers who catered nice food for all players.
If you have not been to this event, there is always next year…Bright Country Golf Club will be happy to have more seniors visiting their facilities!
