Burke wins Senior Womens Amateur

Kim Burke of Shelly Beach, NSW, has outlasted a strong field to claim her first PresCare Queensland Senior Women’s championship at Maroochy River.

Burke, who has previously been defeated by past Senior Amateur Champions Josie Ryan, Jill Blenkey and Wendy O’Connell, said “it was nice to finally get a victory.”

“I’ve had a great five days at Maroochy River.”

Burke remained steady throughout the matchplay phase starting with a 3&2 victory over Pauline Jeffery (Queanbeyan), followed by a 6&5 defeat of Liz Smyth (Royal Canberra). Her consistency proved undeniable with a final 3&2 victory over three-time champion Wendy O’Connell of Wantima.

The interstate victor qualified fourth in the strokeplay event with rounds of 81-79, and four-strokes behind leading qualifier Josie Ryan (Headland).

Other matchplay winners were Karen Collings (Nudgee) in the 55-64 Div 1 section and Kerrie Leary (Oxley) in the 55-64 years Div 2 event.

In 65 Years and over Div 1, Rosalind Mciver (Gosnells) secured a 2-up victory, while Lynette Black (Maroochy River) won her match 1-up in the 65 and over Div 2 event.
