Calling all top seniors

Defending champion Brian Sams knows first-hand the honour of winning the Australian Men’s Senior Match Play Championship.
And, as entries open for this year’s event, the Port Macquarie golfer only wishes there were more opportunities to compete at the top level.
“To win any national title is a great achievement and huge honour,” said Sams, encouraging people to enter.
“Senior golfers have only two such opportunities each year.”
Open to all players listed on the Australian men’s senior ranking system, the event – from , June 15-17 – will return to the West Course at Coolangatta-Tweed Heads Golf Club for the second consecutive year.
From the entries received, the leading 32 players in the rankings will gain a place in the field, with an additional eight spots available to contest the Super-Seniors Flight for those aged 65 and over.
Entrants will play elimination matchplay, with those unsuccessful in the championship draw to contest consolation matches.
Sams, who won last year with a nail-biting triumph Victoria’s Barry Tippett on the 19th hole, said the format made for exciting golf.
“Matchplay definitely brings more players into account and you just never know,” he said.
“But you need to be in it to win it!”
