CEO Statement on Sports Funding Allocations

Golf Australia CEO Stephen Pitt has made the below statement following the 2013/2014 Winning Edge Sports Funding allocations. “Clearly there is a danger in evaluating a sport s funding allocation purely by comparing it to last year s allocation as has occurred with golf. Golf remains a relatively low priority sport for the Australian Sports Commission and that s something we would like to change and we ll continue to work with the ASC to that end. Golf has more than one million participants in Australia, employs 23,000 people, contributes $2.94 billion to the Australian economy annually and positively impacts the health and wellbeing of over 1 million Australians. It is a sport that many Australians care deeply about as evidenced by the national celebration generated by Adam Scott s victory at the Masters Tournament last week. Australia has traditionally been an international powerhouse in this high profile, global sport and over the last 30 years we have been a top three ranked nation in the world. We believe golf represents an excellent investment for the Australian Government and we will be working to bring that to fruition.”
