Challenge cards for Aussie trio

There were no final-round heroics from the Australian contingent as the marathon European Tour Q-school ended in Spain today.

Needing to finish in the top 25 at PGA Catalunya, Daniel Fox, Ryan McCarthy and Ben Eccles each missed the big prize after six rounds with England’s Nathan Kimsey the medallist at 13 under.

Fox, of Western Australia, was the closest of the three remaining Aussies, missing out on the all-important tie for 25th by just two strokes at three under after a closing 73.

McCarthy, of Tasmania, carded a closing 72 to finish at one over par, while Victorian Eccles fired a 73 to end at two over.

All three, however, have the strong consolation prize of a full card on the secondary Challenge Tour in 2017.

Big names that played their way into a card included Italian veteran Edoardo Molinari and former US PGA Championship winner Y.E. Yang.
