Mid Amateur Champions – Phil Chapman & Deb Percey Phil Chapman from the Mt Barker-Hahndorf Golf Club and Deb Percey from Kooyonga Golf Club have claimed the Men’sand Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship. The event in its second year, played at the Links Lady Bay Golf Course over 36 holes attracted a strong field of 45 men and 12 women. On day one, the players teed off in trying conditions with sunshowers throughout the morning and a strong breeze presenting a challenging day for players. Sudeera Botejue from North Lakes Golf Club was the overnight leader in the Men’sChampionship, leading by 1 stroke, with a score of 79, ahead of four players James Coulson, Phil Chapman, Michael Flanagan and Simon Norris who all finished the day with a score of 8-over (80). In the Women’s Championship, Deb Percey (Kooyonga) 84 played steady golf to comfortably lead the Ladies Championship after 18 holes, ahead of Jodie Deacon 95. Day Two conditions were similar to day one, although a stronger wind change arrived in the afternoon making conditions tough for the final 9 holes of the Championship. Players did however manage to find scoring easier on day two with some low rounds posted. With the equal low round of the day, a 2-over (74), two times SA Amateur Champion (1990&95) Phil Chapman claimed the Championship by two ahead of Adrian Pethick (The Grange). Chapman finished the tournament 10-over with rounds of 80-74 (154). I m very happy to end up winning, I played really good today, had it at par or 1 under for most of the day, just slipped at the last two holes finishing bogey, double. Chapman said. Yesterday I didn t play bad, didn t play great, just struggled, but I think with the wind over the two days everyone did the same. It was really nice to be close yesterday and really play well today. It’s nice to have a title. I just enjoy playing competition golf, it was an opportunity to get out and play golf and test yourself again which is good.” Chapman added. “I d like to do it more, but life takes over and your off doing other things, so it was nice to have a tournament at home, that you can come to close and play and catch up with a few guys I haven t seen in a while. I hopefully will be back next year, I plan to be back . Chapman said James Coulson from Flagsatff Hill finished third four shots from the lead with rounds of 80-78 (158). Deb Percey was crowned the Women’s Mid-Amateur Champion shooting another solid round to finish on 175 (84-91), a comfortable 9 shots ahead of Jodie Deacon 184 (95-89).
