Charlton topples world No. 1

Australia's Jo Charlton continued a momentous week in the Women's British Amateur Championship in Northern Ireland by taking out the world No. 1 amateur, Ireland's Leona Maguire, in the round of 16.

Charlton, 26, captain of Victoria's winning women's team at the Interstate Series in Melbourne recently, was seeded 16th going into the matchplay section but shocked Maguire 3 and 1 before her run ended in the quarter-finals. Maguire, a scholarship-holder at Duke University in the United States, had previously dominated the competition and was the overwhelming favorite.

Charlton eventually lost to Sweden's Linnea Strom in the quarters, 2 and 1.

Charlton never touched the same heights after lunch and was two down to her Swedish opponent after 12 holes before she raised her own hopes of a comeback with an eagle three at the 13th and a birdie two at the 15th to square the match.

But it was so far and no further for the Australian who will be returning to Europe for the Ladies European Tour qualifying School later in the year. Strom's par four was good enough to win the 16th, and the Australian conceded the 17th and the match.

The semi-finals and final are tonight (Australian time).
