Choi, Barbieri impress as BritAm begins

Concord’s Doey Choi has finished in a pleasing tie for 11th place in the Women’s Porter Cup at Niagara Falls Country Club in upper New York State.

Choi jumped six places in her final round after carding a two-under-par 70 to finish with a total score of five over par 221 in an encouraging first outing in North America.

Victorian Stephanie Bunque, who was the low amateur at the Australian Ladies Classic at Bonville in late February, was the best placed of the three-women Australian contingent, finishing in a tie for 4th place at two under par, while Queensland’s Dee Dee Russell finished tied 20th at 11 over par.

Nathan Barbieri has stormed home to finish in a tie for 9th in the Monroe Invitational at the Monroe Golf Club in Pittsford, New York.

Barbieri posted rounds of 77,74,66 and 69 for a 286 total. St. Michael’s John Lyras finished at 12 over for the event, which was won by American Kevin O’Connell.

NSW Men’s team captain James Grierson is the best placed of the three NSW entrants at this year’s Amateur Championship, which got underway overnight at Murcar Links and Royal Aberdeen golf clubs in Scotland.

Grierson carded six over par 76 at Murcar in testing conditions to sit in a tie for 111th.

Canberra’s Josh Armstrong and Newcastle’s Blake Windred will have their work cut out to make the 36 hole cut off for the top 64 competitors after posting disappointing rounds of 11 over 81 respectively.

Last year’s runner-up, Dylan Perry, posted a four over par 75 to sit in a tie for 61st position. The former NSW representative now based in Queensland is a two-time qualifier for the matchplay section and will know what to expect.
