Ciupek bound for NSW Open

Victoria Golf Club’s Konrad Ciupek has taken out the NSW Open Regional Qualifying Tournament at Forbes Golf Club and is now bound for Twin Creeks in November.

Ciupek posted a three under par 68 to win by four shots from Forbes local Steve Betland and Mudgee’s Mark Hale. A further shot in arrears was Young Golf Club's Joel Shields, and Joel Wheatley from Fox Hills.

Ciupek said he had no hesitation making the trip to Forbes, and the result was well worth the effort.

“I like this course. I had a practice round on Saturday and the round today were both enjoyable.

“The greens were good; perhaps not quite as fast as I'm used to at home, but they are true in line and have really good pace.

“The greens staff have done a really good job,” he said.

Sunday’s regional qualifier attracted over 120 players from NSW and interstate representatives seeking places in both the Open and Men’s Senior Open fields.

Reports from out west say local Darryl McAuliffe was the happiest man in town after he grabbed one of the places in the Men’s Senior Open at Thurgoona Golf and Country Club in October.

McAuliffe carded a creditable 79 off the stick, despite telling anyone who would listen he would be happy to break 100, and had no chance of qualifying for the Senior Open.

“I can't wait, what an experience,” McAuliffe said.

Wagga Wagga's Peter Zotti also carded a 79 to snatch a place alongside McAuliffe in the Men's Senior Open.
