Collyer & Park Set The Pace

Round 2 – Collyer & Park Set The Pace

The second round of the 2014 Boys and Girls Championship continued today at Northern Golf Club.  Like yesterday, conditions were quite tricky with the greens hard and fast and a gusty northerly making an appearance for the majority of the day. A consolation to the field was the fact that the sun was again out in full force.

After firing a round of 74 yesterday, Metropolitan’s Blake Collyer returned a one under 71 this morning to leap frog the overnight leader in Blake Windred and take the lead by three shots at the half way mark in the boys section. The +1 marker got off to a solid start with an eagle 2 on the par 4 2nd hole followed by a birdie on the par 5 3rd to go out in 34. Three more birdies on the back nine saw him reach 5 under par but a few late bogies marred what was otherwise a fantastic round of golf.
Still in the hunt is the 2013 Victorian Boys Champion Frazer Droop who duplicated his round of 74 yesterday to sit three shots behind Collyer on 148. After a lever par 72 yesterday, Konrad Ciupek signed for a respectable 76 today to find himself in the final group and tied with Droop and Windred. Also on 148 is Bailey Holloway after rounds of 72 and 76.
Soo Bin Park held her composure this morning to return another round of 74 for a 36-hole tally of 148. The Peninsula-Kingswood member will take a narrow two shot buffer over Kono Matsumoto who carded a round of one over-par 73. Matsumoto felt much more at ease with her own equipment when she was reunited with her own clubs yesterday evening after they went astray on a recent visit to the UK.
Olivia Kline and Amy Chu are still in the hunt and will be applying the heat come tomorrow morning. Kline is currently poised a modest four shots back from Park, with Chu another shot adrift.
68 boys and 28 girls have qualified though to the final 36-holes at Yarra Yarra when the 3rd round commences at 7:30am.

Round 1 – Windred & Park Lead Junior Championships

The first round of the 2014 Victorian Boys and Girls Championship kicked off this morning at Northern Golf Club. The sun was shining brightly with not a cloud in the sky as record 40 girls and 104 boys took to the Northern layout in chase for the respective titles. A moderate northerly breeze gained momentum by mid-morning to keep the afternoon field on their toes and made good scoring quite problematic.

New South Welshman Blake Windred has hit the ground running in the boys section with a fine one under-par 71 on the firm greens this afternoon. The Monash member turned in a level par 36 before coming home with a steady 35 to lead the opening stanza by a single shot.
Windred leads two players, Bailey Holloway and Konrad Ciupek, by a single shot after the pair finished with 72 this today. Defending champion Frazer Droop signed for 74 to be tied fifth.
In the girls section Soo Bin Park is poised at the top of the leader board after carding a two over-par 74 to lead her fellow Victorian teammate Olivia Kline by two shots. Amy Chu (Bonnie Doon) and the current Australian Girls Champion in Kono Matsumoto (Victoria) were next best with 77 apiece.
Today’s highlight came from Darren Makin who aced the 142m 6th hole when his perfectly struck 8 iron flew straight into the cup.
With only a limited number progressing through to Wednesday’s final 36-holes at Yarra Yarra, many will be eager to make up some ground on the leaders when the second round commences tomorrow morning. Fine weather is again predicted, with temperatures expected to reach into the mid 20’s.
