Commonwealth duo claim Sandhurst titles

The Golf Victoria Junior Tournament was contested today at Sandhurst Golf Club with yet another jam-packed field of 100 players. Unfortunately, brutal conditions met the players as they battled around the challenging North Course. Squally showers made the going tough and fierce southerly winds meant the temperature felt closer to 0.

Sandhurst’s very own Kai Shipp took home the girls title on her home soil. Whilst the 17-year-old now calls Commonwealth home she is still a regular around the club at Sandhurst. Shipp finished one shot ahead of Southern’s Alessandra Nagayo and two in front of Kay Bannan.

After a strong year of golf to date Daniel Gill from Commonwealth fired a great score to capture the overall boys title. The Commonwealth member managed his way round the par 72 layout with a solid round of level par in the gusty conditions to prevail on a count-back over Kristoff Soliven. This form will hold him in good stead as he spearheads up an all-star line up at Moonah Links in chase for the coveted Victorian Boys Championship in September.

Whilst Soliven narrowly missed out on top spot in the overall gross section he did fire the lowest nett score in A Division to take home the handicap title on 71.

For back-to-back wins in this very event, Levi Wardle notched out Rupert Toomey with a score of 72 to be poised at the top of the leaderboard in B Division. In 2017 the Kooringal member fired nett 67 for the win. Making the trek all the way from Bairnsdale was Noah Patterson who tallied up an impressive 40 stableford points to walk home victorious.

Amidst all the shots today one stood head and shoulders above the rest, Joshua Marshall’s hole in one on the par 3 3rd hole. Measuring 153 metres, the 14-year-old flushed a 7-iron which landed just before the pin, checked, and then slowly rolled into the hole for his first ace.

Whilst the older players made it out this afternoon for the 18-hole competition, the 9-hole Rookie Series event that was scheduled prior was cancelled. Hail storms and 70kph winds made conditions unplayable early in the morning.

A big thank you to Sandhurst for their continued support towards junior golf in Victoria.
