Day 4 Summary: The mild conditions were conducive to some good rounds with a number of players shooting under par.
Corey Conners from Canada continued his blistering form carding an eagle and three birdies on his way to a third consecutive 68 to go with his first round 67 for a tournament total of 271 – 17 under the card.
Andrew McCain from the USA also shot a 68 today including 6 birdies to run second on his own. Ryan Chisnall from New Zealand followed up rounds of 70, 68, 70, with another 68 featuring 6 birdies to be 12 under for the tournament as did Cameron Davis, but Chisnall prevailed on a count back for third.
Travis Smyth from St Michaels also compiled a fine 65 with an eagle and seven birdies to be 9 under for the tournament along with Harrison Endycott from Avondale who had a 69, Jake McLeod from Queensland who fired a second 69 for 9 under and Simon Vitikangas who ended his run of three consecutive 69’s with a par round of 72.
Ben Stow from England shot six birdies and an eagle for his 68 to finish 8 under as did the Junior winner of the tournament, Kevin Yuan from The Australian.
Day 3 Summary: “Moving Day” as they say, got underway in very light conditions for the third day in a row, with a light northeaster prevailing. Canada’s Corey Conners has set himself up for a real tilt at the title with one round to go. One under on the front nine today, he sunk birdie putts on 10, 16 and 18 for a second consecutive 68, 13 under par heading in to the last day with a three shot buffer over Cameron Davis from Monash with a third round 67 including seven birdies, to go with his 69 and 70.
Andrew McCain from the United States fired six birdies in a bogey free round of 66 (the best round of the day) and together with previous rounds of 73 and 68, sits 9 under par heading in to the final round. He is joined by New Zealand’s Jason Gulasekharam who shot 68 today including 5 birdies and the very consistent Simon Vitikangas from Queensland who fired a third consecutive 69.
Luke Toomey, last year’s runner up followed rounds of 67, 72 with a 69 today including an eagle on the 9th and birdies on 10, 11 and 12 to be eight under along with fellow Kiwi, Ryan Chisnell who was two under today following previous rounds of 70 and 68. One stroke back is Kade McBride from Queensland on seven under following rounds of 70, 68 and 71.
Kevin Yuan from The Australian had two front nine birdies and was three under on the back nine for a solid 68 and coupled with his previous rounds of 70 and 72, sits six under par. He is joined by Jake McLeod 69 (six birdies and three bogeys), Paul Howard (five birdies and two bogeys), Tylor Hodge (four birdies, one bogey) and Justin Warren who unfortunately had three over today following his 67 yesterday.
Lucas Herbert from Commonwealth Golf Club enjoyed the conditions to fire an eagle to go with 3 front nine birdies and 3 back nine birdies for a very solid 67 to go with his 70 and 74 to be 5 under after three rounds. Ben Stow from the UK found some touch with 6 birdies and two bogies for a fine 68 to go with his previous two par rounds and is four under for the three rounds.
There are a number of players “in the mix” but Connors is playing some very solid consistent golf and will be hard to chase down.
Day 2 Summary: For the second consecutive day the early field hit off in very calm conditions with a very light northeaster prevailing which shifted into a Southerly during the afternoon.
Canada’s Corey Collins fired a string of birdies on 15, 16 and 17 during his round of 68 on the back of his first round leading score of 67. Also on 135 is Justin Warren from The Australian Golf Club whose bogey free round of 65 included four front nine birdies with three on the back nine.
Simon Vitikangas from Queensland made four birdies and a lone bogey on his way to a second consecutive 69 for a two round total of 138. Ryan Chisnell from New Zealand followed up his first round 70 with a fine 68 today with 6 birdies and 2 bogeys. Kade Mcbride from Queensland has also had rounds of 70 and 68 today including 5 birdies to have a share of equal second place.
There are three players on 139, Cameron Davis from Monash, Jason Gulasekharam from New Zealand and overnight leader Luke Toomey who only managed a par round today. Harrison Endycott from Avondale Golf Club also shot 69 including five birdies to sit on 140 for the two rounds.
Paul Howard from the UK (5 birdies and an Eagle) and Charlie Dann from Qld (4 birdies and an Eagle) both had 68”s to go with their first round 73’s to sit on 141 along with four other players – Andrew McCain, Tim Hyland, Jake McLeod and Tyler Hodge.
The cut for the final two rounds for the top 80 plus ties is 151. 81 players will tee it up for the final two rounds. The third round will get underway at 7 am tomorrow.
Day 1 Summary: One hundred and seventy six players got underway in unusually benign conditions on the first day of the Lake Macquarie Amateur Championship at Belmont Golf Club. New Zealand’s Luke Toomey, last year’s runner up, led the way in the morning field with a very fine five under par 67 to be in a good position after the first round. Out in 35 with birdies on the 4th and 8th and a bogie on 3, Toomey stormed home in 32 with birdies on 10, 14, 16 and 18. This score was matched in the afternoon by Corey Connors from Canada who birdied 6 through 9 following a bogie at the par three third and eagled the 10th.
There are a number of players on three under 69. Troy Moses from Bonnie Doon was out in 38 but with eagles on 10 and 16 to compliment his birdie on 13, fired a 31 on the back nine. Jason Gulasekharam from New Zealand compiled four birdies and a bogie on his way to 69 as did his fellow countryman Tyler Hodge. Cameron Davis from Monash, having shot one over on the front nine, fired four birdies on the back nine.
There are a number of players on 70 and Belmont’s own Club Champion Shaun O’Malley had a one over par 73 to put himself in the mix for tomorrow.
