Copperclub opens at Port Hughes

Australian golfing legend Greg Norman s first course design in South Australia has been officially opened for play as of Wednesday 1 June. The finishing touches have been put on the first nine holes of the new Copperclub golf course at The Dunes Port Hughes on the Yorke Peninsula, with thousands of golfers expected to tackle the Scottish style links layout in coming months. Already the club has received an enormous amount of enquiries from golfers across Australia wanting to be one of the first to play the course, with almost 150 members already signed up. Copperclub General Manager and professional golfer Barry West said players can expect a challenging yet forgiving course . There are plenty of extended sand dunes and bunkers to avoid, but the fairways are wide and the greens are large which will certainly be appreciated by amateur golfers, said Mr West, who has joined Copperclub from the Lion Lake Country Club in China, which last year was voted by Golf Vacations magazine as the country s Best New Golf Club. The course is in great condition and will only get better, so we re looking forward to welcoming as many people as possible to challenge themselves on a course designed by one of the best golfers the world has ever seen. To complete the first nine holes, more than 180,000sqm of top quality couch grass has been rolled out at Copperclub to make it one of the first golf courses in Australia to be laid entirely with instant turf, rather than grown from seed. A similar approach will be taken to the second nine holes currently in planning, with major construction set to start next year. Opening the first nine holes is a major milestone for Copperclub and the wider Dunes Port Hughes development, but rather than rest on our laurels, we ve already turned our attention to the second nine holes and our overall aim to establish Copperclub as one of the finest PGA standard courses in the State, he said. Troon Golf, the world s premier golf course management company, has partnered Copperclub to oversee the establishment of the course and ongoing operations in what is its first foray into the South Australian market, while the SA Golf Association has formally approved the course. Membership packages at Copperclub have been set at $95 for junior packages through to $1695 for family memberships, while individual adult memberships range from $395 to $995 depending on access and playing rights. Casual green fee rates for nonmember visitors are $50 for 18 holes and $35 for nine. Located on the Yorke Peninsula adjacent Port Hughes pristine South Beach, The Dunes is South Australia s premier residential and resort development, which over the next decade will see construction of approximately 2,000 homes and world-class leisure facilities such as Copperclub.
