Murray Darling have made history, winning their first ever men’s division one title in this year’s country teams matches.
Taking on Goulburn Murray at Victoria Golf Club today, Murray Darling needed the outright win to guarantee victory and deny Goulburn Murray back-to-back titles.
Ashley Whitehouse topped a fantastic week at number three for Murray Darling with a 3/1 victory over Andrew Storer.
Mark Hann and Garth Doherty also enjoyed victories to give Murray Darling three wins on the board.
Goulburn Murray’s Matt Sellars and Daniel Adem both finished undefeated for the week and when Blair Christie joined them as winners today, it would come down to the number one match.
It would be Murray Darling’s Tim Walker who would come out on top in a tough battle 3/1 over Goulburn Murray captain Caleb Bovalina.
Walker would finish the week undefeated at the number one position.
In the women’s division one, Golf Peninsula Vic proved too strong for Golf Central Vic with a commanding 4.5 to 2.5 victory.
Golf Peninsula Vic were led strongly by their top three players in Sue Wooster, Kim Kennedy and Monica Marchesani who all had impressive victories.
Suzanne Van Strien was the standout performer for Golf Peninsula Vic as she went through the week undefeated.
Today’s victory meant Golf Peninsula Vic were victorious in all 4 matches and comprehensively took home the title.
Other undefeated players for the week included Casey Wild (North Eastern), Tristen Wearne and Tahlia Holmberg (Golf Central Vic).
In the men’s division two at Rossdale Golf Club, West Gippsland proved too strong with three wins and a tie to make their way back into division one.
Mark Allen was undefeated for the winning side and was joined by Baxter Droop (North Eastern) and Mark Boulton (South Gippsland) as undefeated players for the week.
The women would see a thrilling finish with Murray Darling holding on to their overnight lead by the tightest of margins over South Western.
With both teams equal on overall wins as well as number of matches, results would go to the individual match between the two districts which Murray Darling was successful in.
Over at Sandhurst for division three matches, it would be Western in the women and Golf Central Vic in the men who would take home the titles and make their way back into division two for next year.
Over the past three days, 15 men’s and women’s teams representing Victorian Country District Golf Associations have competed in team matcj play as part of country week golf.
To conclude the week, the Victorian Country team was announced which will play the South Australia Country Team on the weekend of November 23-24 at the Nhill Golf Club. The team is made up of eight men as well as for the first time this year two women.
