Country Week Day 2 Wrap

The Men’s & Women’s Country Week Teams’ Matches continued today at Spring Valley, Cranbourne and Settlers Run Golf Clubs. Players enjoyed a beautiful 23 degree day for rounds 3 and 4 of the competition.

Spring Valley was presented in pristine condition and played host to the Men’s Shield (Division 1) and Women’s Division 1 matches. In the morning, Western and South Western halved their contest in the Men’s shield while Golf Peninsula Vic proved too strong for West Gippsland. The Golf Peninsula Vic ladies went down 4-3 against Ballarat and Goulburn Murray had a convincing win over North Eastern to sit atop of the ladder in Women’s Division 1 after round 3.

Play resumed for round 4 in the afternoon and it was Western who inflicted the first loss to Ballarat in the Men’s Shield for the week. Number one player for Western, Simon Goggin, helped his team clinch victory after defeating Sean Klain 2 and 1. The other Men’s Shield match was a top and bottom of the ladder clash between Golf Peninsula Vic and South Western. Golf Peninsula Vic number 1 Anthony Marchesani continued to lead from the front and won his match 3 and 1 to remain undefeated this week. However, it was not enough to get his team over the line and South Western recorded a highly impressive 4-3 win. Despite the loss, Golf Peninsula Vic remain on top of the ladder with Ballarat trailing closely behind on percentage heading into the final round tomorrow.

In Women’s Division 1, North Eastern recovered from their disappointing loss this morning to defeat Western 6-1. Goulburn Murray remain as the team to beat after overcoming Ballarat 5-2. Ballarat didn’t go down without a fight and put up a strong fight in all their matches. Goulburn Murray now have Golf Peninsula left in their sights tomorrow morning in a contest that will decide the winners of Division 1.

Further along at Cranbourne Golf Club, it was a close round 3 contest in the Men’s Plate (Division 2) between Murray Darling and Dalhousie, only one match separating the two teams in favour of Murray Darling. It was a very different story for the remaining morning contest, with Goulburn Murray taking a 6.5 to 0.5 win over North Eastern. It was almost a carbon copy of men’s results in Women’s Division 2, with Golf Central Victoria following Goulburn Murray Men’s lead, defeating South Western 6 to 1, the remaining contest between Northern and Dalhousie couldn’t be separated, the match result being halved.

In the afternoon, Goulburn Murray continued their winning form in the men’s section, defeating Dalhousie by a convincing 6 to 1 margin. Murray Darling and Golf Central Victoria halved their contest with 3.5 wins a piece. Goulburn Murray look like the team to beat, following in the footsteps of their women’s team from 2016. In Women's Division 2, Golf Central Vic had a comfortable 5.5 to 1.5 win in their round 2 contest with Northern and the afternoon was rounded out with a tied contest between East Gippsland and South Western.

Women's Division 3 is set for an exciting finale after today's round at Settlers Run, with Wimmera leading the race with a total of 1.5 points just half a point clear of both the South & West Gippsland teams (1 point) with Murray Darling also in with a chance just one point behind with a total of 0.5 points.

In contrast, the Men's Division 3 title has been decided with the final round still to play. East Gippsland capped off a dominant display with a tight 4 matches 3 win over Northern in this afternoons round four match to remain undefeated.

Losing just a combined 6 matches from 28 will ensure the team will head to Division 2 next year full of confidence.
