Daniel Brooks maintains lead as Campillo, Nel shoot 59s

Daniel Brooks maintained his position at the top of the leaderboard on another rain-affected day at the Nelson Mandela Championship.

Brooks, who held a one-shot lead going into the third day after posting an eight-under-par score in his first round, shot four under through 10 holes of his second round before play was suspended due to darkness, moving him to 12 under overall.

The start of play on day three was delayed by three hours due to the inclement weather at the Mount Edgecombe Course, with some players still to finish their first rounds.

Heavy rain has caused much disruption throughout the tournament and organisers have now decided to reduce the competition to three rounds, with a cut to 65 and ties at the end of round two.

When play finally got underway it was Spain's Jorge Campillo and South African Colin Nel who stole the spotlight.

The duo looked to have made history as they both signed for second-round 59s. However, the European Tour later confirmed that the scores would not count as the first official sub-60 rounds in European Tour history because a reduced par and preferred lies were used to achieve them.

Still, Campillo's performance, which included two eagles and seven birdies, saw him surge into second at 11 under, although Nel is seven strokes further back on four under.

England's Matthew Baldwin is tied with Campillo for second after he carded and excellent round of eight under to boost his hopes of claiming a maiden European Tour crown.

Three South Africans, Oliver Bekker, Branden Grace and Dawie van der Walt are carrying the hopes of the home fans at 10 under, with France's Romain Wattel a shot further back.

At the other end Italy's Edoardo Molinari is in danger of missing the cut after he could only card a score of one under to move to level par.

Players still to finish round two are due to start at 06:00 local time. Round three – which will be a two-tee start – will not begin before 09:15.
