Monash Country Club’s Cameron Davis has a three shot lead at the half-way mark of the English Men’s Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship at London Golf Club in Stansted, England.
The Golf NSW HP and Golf Australia HP squad member sits at 10-under par after 36 holes in his chase for the Brabazon Trophy. Davis carded a 4 under-par round of 68 overnight to go with his first round 6-under-par 66, which included five straight birdies in a srtunning start to the championship.
Davis was happy with his play during the second round. “I hit the ball very well but didn’t make as many putts inside 10ft as I did yesterday. I was happy with the birdies I made, but I left a lot of chances out there.”
Unfortunately, the fickle English weather has played havoc with the tournament. A two-hour rain delay in the morning followed by a thunderstorm in the early evening meant a number of players are still to complete their rounds.
Davis however, relieved to be among those who were able to finish round two.
“I was very happy we got to play today. It wouldn’t have been too great if we’d had to hang around all day. The course was very much wetter than yesterday but they got it in great shape from when we first looked at it,” he said.
Unfortunately for the Vintage Golf Club’s Dylan Perry, a dodgy chicken burger ruined his chances of competing in the Championship, forcing his withdrawal on the tournament’s eve.
“I tried to play. I went to the range to see how I would go, but I couldn’t stand over the ball without almost falling over with nausea. I’m gutted really, I’ve been playing awesome and really felt as though I would’ve made a good showing here,” he said.
The English Men’s Open Amateur Championship is played over 72 holes of stroke play. After 36 holes the leading 60 competitors and ties for 60th place play a further 18 holes on the third day and fourth day to decide the Champion and recipient of the Brabazon trophy. Round three will be conducted overnight.
