Cameron Davis has stormed into the semi-finals of the Australian Amatuer Championships with some superb iron play at The Australian Golf Club.
In breezy conditions, the Davis made the turn 1up over his Queensland opponent Jack Sullivan. Some majestic approach shots to the 14th, 15th and 16th holes, meant it was always difficult for Sullivan to get back in the match.
Davis is the highest seeded player still left in the tournament and despite missing a few birdie putts, the big-hitting New South Welshman carded 4-under par through the 16 holes needed to win the match 3 & 2.
Justin Warren fought his way through to the semi-finals at the 19th hole after a see-sawing battle with fellow New South Welshman Brayden Petersen.
Tyler Hodge got the better of his New Zealand compatriot Jason Gulasekharam winning 2&1 and faces off against Kevin Yuan this afternoon after he edged out Canadian Corey Conners by the same margin.
Becky Kay was the biggest winner on the women’s side of the draw. Kay won her last four holes to win 4&3 and is drawn against Shelly Shin in the semi-final.
Shin featured in the biggest upset of the day when the winning World Amateur team-winning member beat the medallist So-Young Lee at the 19th hole.
Jo Charlton is through to the semi-finals after beating Victoria’s Julianne Soo, also at the 19th hole. Charlton will face Australian GC member Lizzy Elmassian after she beat Western Australia’s Hannah Green in an incredible finish at the 18th hole.
Into a difficult, gusty breeze, Elmassian hit a remarkable approach shot to within a few feet of the hole. Green came within inches of holing her chip shot in a valiant attempt to force the match to extra holes.
