Day all smiles ahead of U.S Open test

here is a Major championship that seems to fit Jason Day's eye, the U.S Open is it.

The 26 year-old Queenslander headed out on to the fabled No.2 layout at Pinehurst for the first official practice round ahead of this week's U.S Open Championship.

World Number 7 Day finished the 2013 championship at Merion in a tie for runner-up with Phil Mickelson – two strokes behind England's Justin Rose who went on to lift the trophy. Both Rose and Day shot equal scores over that wet weekend in Pennsylvania.

In 2011, Day also finished runner-up – the closest chaser to Rory McIlroy who scorched his way around Congressional to win by a massive eight strokes at 16-under par for the week.

Despite injury concerns, 2014 has been a good year to date for the Ohio resident.

Day collected his second career win on the PGA Tour in February at the Accenture World Match Play Championship – his first since the 2010 HP Byron Nelson Championship. Day also won the individual competition at the ISPS HANDA World Cup of Golf at Royal Melbourne at the end of 2013.

In recent months, Day's progress has hampered by a persisent thumb injury which forced him to take seven weeks off to recover. He returned to action for the first time since The Masters at the Memorial Tournament a fortnight ago.

With more wet weather forecast this week at Pinehurst in North Carolina, Day will be keen to be in the mix again as he was at Merion. The U.S Open course setup is designed to be a grind. As his two runner-up finishes in recent years have proved, when it comes to grinding under U.S Open pressure, there are few better.
