Jason Day removed fears of a recurrence of his back problems with a sizzling 64 and Tiger Woods made the cut at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines today.
Day had withdrawn from the pro-am event, and walked gingerly through his first-round 73 on Thursday, but he was on song and bogey-free today with the lowest round of the day, a 64.
The Australian is seeking to win for the first time since the Players Championship in 2016. He is at seven-under overall, four shots from the lead.
“Some years are going to be low, some years are going to be high, so you always have to have that motivation and focus to drive forward,” he said.
Woods was in danger of missing the weekend's action but birdied two of his last three holes to sneak in at one-under par, carding a 71.
"It was a grind," he said later. "I fought hard, typical me going out there fighting for what I could get, and it felt good."
American Ryan Palmer leads the tournament through 36 holes at 11-under.
Spain's John Rahm, who will climb to No. 1 in the world if he wins the tournament, is only one shot back.
Another Australian, Cameron Smith, is in a good position tied-14th, while Marc Leishman is just outside the top 20.
Young Sydney professional Cameron Davis, playing just his second US Tour event, made the cut at two-under.
MEANWHILE, in the Bahamas, high winds forced the cancellation of the second round of the Pure Silk LPGA Bahamas Classic, with Australia's Sarah Jane Smith in a share of the lead at four under par.
Smith was a shot back through one round, but overnight leader Brooke Henderson dropped a shot on her only hole played of the second round and Smith did not even get on to the course.
