Jason Day is expected to play in this week’s US PGA Tour Championship.
Day, one of five players guaranteed to win the FedEx Cup and $10million bonus with a victory at East Lake Golf Club, withdrew during midway through the final round of the recent BMW Championship with a back injury.
But Golf Channel’s Todd Lewis today reported that Day was “cautiously optimistic” of taking his place in the Atlanta field where golf’s richest prize is finalised.
The world No.1 has had ongoing treatment after a scan revealed he had a pinched joint capsule, but those close to him say he’s vastly improved since he left Crooked Stick Golf Club in obvious pain two Sundays ago.
Despite the withdrawal in Indiana, Day remained in the coveted fourth position overall in the FedEx Cup standings, with the top five controlling their destiny at the season finale.
Fellow Queenslander Adam Scott is ranked third, Patrick Reed second and Dustin Johnson first in the standings, with England’s Paul Casey fifth.
Day, whose magnificent three-win season has probably been surpassed by Johnson by virtue of the American’s major triumph at June’s US Open, faces the additional pressure of probably needing to win to gain the Tour’s coveted player of the year honour.
