The first two rounds of the 2015 Women’s Country Teams got under way today with Divisions 1 & 3 playing at Spring Valley Golf Club while Division 2 played their contests at Rossdale. Fifteen Country Districts have made the trip to metropolitan Melbourne to contest in the team Match Play style event.
In Division 1, defending champions South Western fought a tough battle with Mornington Peninsula, managing to win 4 and 3 in round one. They followed that up with a 4.5 to 2.5 win over North Eastern in round two to be on top of the table after day one.
Across at Rossdale in Division 2, Ballarat got off to an impressive start with two impressive 4.5-2.5 wins over last year’s Division 3 champions Dalhousie, and Goulburn Valley. They will lead the charge heading into day two.
Competing in Division 3 is Marg McGlashen (Murray Darling) who is remarkably playing in her 25th Country Teams, with her first appearance back in 1986. McGlashen is undefeated after 2 rounds with a 6 and 5 win in the morning backed up with a 1 up win in the afternoon. Murray Darling are undefeated in Division 3, with players in the Wimmera versus Northern battle almost putting out in the dark for a squared contest.
Inconsistent weather, including winds averaging 20-30 km/h and threatening skies, made the going tough for the afternoon matches. Familiar conditions will greet the players tomorrow as matches continue at Woodlands (Divisions 2 & 3) & Settlers Run (Division 1).
