Day poised to play Masters

Jason Day appears poised to play in the Masters.

Day's mother Dening is recovering in Ohio from complex surgery nine days ago to remove a 3-4cm lung cancer, leaving the world No.3 understandably undecided about playing in the year's first major.

But after practising at Augusta National over the weekend, Day seems set for his seventh tilt at a green jacket.

The 29-year-old withdrew in tears from the WGC Match Play Championship a fortnight ago, revealing Dening's dire circumstance had made it impossible for him to focus on golf in 2017.

But the Queenslander played nine holes at Augusta on Saturday (AEST) and another nine on Sunday before some late-afternoon short-game work with long-time caddie and coach, Colin Swatton.

Day's wife, Ellie, and children Dash, 4, and Lucy, 1, are back in Ohio caring for Dening.

They usually live as a unit in the family's campervan, so the capacity for Day to make a quick getaway is higher than normal.

But unless Dening's immediate situation changes, Day will chase the trophy he covets probably above all others come Thursday.

He was runner-up on debut in 2011, withdrew in 2012 and third behind Adam Scott in 2013 and T10 again last year.

Meanwhile, Scott is due to arrive at Augusta overnight after missing the cut at the Houston Open with rounds of 68 and 77.
