Day within 2 at Pebble Beach

Jason Day is in with a chance of a second win in as many starts on the US PGA Tour’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Day carded a third-round 69 at Pebble Beach to move into a tie for third, one shot behind the led held by world No. 1 Dustin Johnson and fellow-American Ted Potter.

The leading duo are at 14-under to Day’s 12-under.

Day, who says he is hellbent on returning to No. 1 in the world, will never get a better chance to push his case with Johnson in front of him tomorrow.

His ranking fell to 14th earlier this year but he returned to the top 10 by winning the tournament at Torrey Pines a fortnight ago.

Day said he did not plan to change his approach in the final round. “Just try and be patient with myself tomorrow,’’ he said. “I think just get the opportunities. I'm making a lot of birdies, which is nice, and that's good to see.  I made three bogeys today which was a little bit of a disappointment, especially on the easy holes, (Number) 11, I made one on the par-five 14th, and then (Number) 1. So they were three scoring opportunities and I went the other way. So if I can just tidy those up that will be great.’’
