Devonport double delight after pennant upsets

Last Sunday s Northern Pennant play-off at Launceston saw Devonport defeat the much fancied Mowbray Golf Club in divisions one and two. The club ventured to Launceston missing a few members of its North West finals line-ups but came away with four matches to three wins in both divisions. For Devonport Steven Mathew defeated Curt Mathews 3&2 and Peter Nielson beat Drew Ponting 5&4. While Paul Kuipers overcame Darren Kelp and Greg Leedham was victorious over Heath Bailey, both one up at the thirty eighth hole. Mowbray secured its three wins through James Pyke routing Scott Read 12&11, John Cassidy beating Stuart Gray 6&4 and Shayne Walker surprising Ben Perkovic 6&5. Division two wins were spread throughout the order with Paul Burke, Jye Read, Mark Allison and Neville Dance all collecting wins for Devonport. Daniel Murray, George Waller and Sam Donnellan were the stand-out performers for Mowbray. Launceston took full advantage of the home course final and recorded a 5 -1 victory over Ulverstone in division three. Some big wins going to Anthony Rist defeating Andrew Simpson 10&9 and Glen McAdam beating Jamie Walmsley 8&7. Devonport will now progress to the division one State final where they will meet Tasmania at Kingston Beach Golf Club on July 7. The remaining 36-hole State finals will see Devonport encounter Claremont in division two and Tasmania battle Launceston in division three.
